| | | Moving on at Rosedale | | December 22, 2009 | | | | Hats off to the D.C. Council for pushing to get the Rosedale Community Center under construction after Mayor Adrian Fenty's administration pulled a fast one with funding. The administration moved funds from the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation to the semi-independent D.C. Housing Authority.
At the very least, the shift of Rosedale and a host of other parks projects to the Housing Authority was against the spirit of the law that requires all contracts over $1 million to be reviewed by the D.C. Council.
The D.C. Council this week voted to turn the funding back to the parks department. Construction will be overseen by Allen Lew, who has been praised highly for his work on numerous public school projects.
Ward 6 D.C. Council member Tommy Wells wisely got an amendment through ordering the parks department to go over each project's details with Mr. Lew's office within 30 days.
There was justifiable fear that by canceling the Fenty administration's probable illegal contracts, parks projects such as Rosedale would be delayed for years. Now, hopefully, thanks to Mr. Wells’ pushing, plans can move forward for a brand-new, 22,000-square-foot Rosedale Community Center, which will include a new neighborhood library. | | | | | Log in to comment on this article |
