| | | How to make a deal | | January 18, 2010 | | | | Before final decisions are made on the future of the Eastern Branch Boys & Girls Club building — which the city recently purchased — the District government should seek extensive community input.
Last week, city officials announced that the private Maret School would have exclusive access to the sports fields at Jelleff recreation center in Georgetown during prime weekday hours in exchange for $2.5 million in improvements. Meanwhile, leaders of the British School of Tenleytown said they would have liked the chance to make a bid but were not given the opportunity.
Chuck Burger, chair of a task force convened by Ward 6 D.C. Council member Tommy Wells, has outlined goals for the Eastern Branch space. We think local advisory neighborhood commission should examine the concepts before they become the basis for a renovation. The city should then work any recommended changes into the task force’s list before it puts out a formal request for proposals. Given the city’s budget crunch, a partnership between the Department of Parks and Recreation and a private group could be in order.
We trust Mr. Wells will ensure that all parties have a chance to make proposals for Eastern Branch, avoiding the sort of deal making that transpired in Georgetown. | | | | | Log in to comment on this article |
