| | | Ronneberg wins Northeast Capitol Hill (ANC 6A) special election; commmissioners support new liquor licenses | | February 19, 2010 | | | | At the commission’s Feb. 11 meeting:
• Residents of the commission’s single-member district 6A02 elected Drew Ronneberg to replace former commissioner Joe Fengler in a special election. Ronneberg received 92 votes; Bobby Pittman received 14.
• Commissioner David Holmes said the “reprehensible” conduct of two commissioners helped encourage the D.C. Public Charter School Board to approve AppleTree Institute’s planned move into a 12th Street NE row house. The commission had opposed the location of the charter school by majority vote, but commissioners Mary Beatty and Kelvin Robinson wrote a letter to the charter board supporting the location. Beatty responded that she was flattered that Holmes believed “one little letter from me” would affect the board’s decision.
• The commission voted 5-0-1, with commissioner Nick Alberti abstaining, to protest a tavern liquor-license application for Biergarten Haus, 1355 H St., unless a voluntary agreement is signed before March 8.
• The commission voted 5-0-1, with commissioner Nick Alberti abstaining, to protest a restaurant liquor-license application from Souk, 1208 H St. NE, unless a voluntary agreement is signed before March 1.
• The commission voted 5-0-1, with commissioner Nick Alberti abstaining, to support a substantial change to Rock & Roll Hotel’s liquor license to allow a 99-seat roof deck. Owner Joe Englert will sign a voluntary agreement with the commission that limits the roof deck’s hours. The agreement is subject to a trial period through Aug. 31 in order to evaluate potential noise issues.
• The commission unanimously supported a zoning application from Gallaudet University to amend its campus plan in order to convert Denison House from administrative to residential use. The university plans to make the building a living/learning dormitory for students and professors.
• The commission unanimously supported a Historic Preservation Review Board application for 324 and 326 12th St. NE, which are currently vacant lots. The developer plans to construct four residential units.
• The commission approved the 2010 goals of its economic development and zoning committee. The goals include ensuring the redevelopment of the H Street Connection site at 8th and H streets NE, ensuring that vacant properties within the commission’s boundaries are on the city’s vacant property list, and working with the city’s Office of Tax and Revenue to “eliminate discrepancies in H Street NE property assessments.”
• The commission tentatively agreed to send a letter to the District Department of Transportation and other agencies to request a solution to the noise that the 90 and 92 buses have caused on 10th Street NE since they were rerouted due to construction.
• The commission took no position on the National Marathon’s new proposed route for its March 20 race. A motion to support the marathon failed with a 4-4 vote. Some neighborhood commissioners have complained about traffic backups and the failure of traffic officers to allow cars to cross streets when there are large gaps between packs of runners.
The commission voted to ask Mayor Adrian Fenty, his special events task force, the police department’s Homeland Security Bureau and Special Operations Division, and Ward 6 Council member Tommy Wells to consider the commission’s proposed guidelines for races in residential areas. The guidelines recommend that races run one way along a street with no return on nearby parallel streets, that the end point of races fall outside of residential areas, and that routes change from year to year to disseminate the impact on particular neighborhoods. | | | | | Log in to comment on this article |
