heard treasurer Tony Richardson report the commission has a bank balance of $79,782.
heard a U.S. Census Bureau representative remind the commission that the bureau will conduct its next census in March 2010. Community members can expect to see bureau employees on foot verifying local addresses in the coming months.
heard a representative of the Friends of Bundy Park, an organization working to convert the vacant lot on P Street NW between 5th Street and New Jersey Avenue into a dog park. The commission withheld its support pending more information from the D.C. Department of Transportation and the Shaw advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 2C), because the park is within its bounds.
heard Terri Merz of Chapters Literary Bookstore, which operated downtown in various locations for 22 years, announce that the nonprofit bookstore will reopen at 601 Pennsylvania Ave. NW.
voted 4-2 not to support an Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration liquor-license renewal application from Kelly’s Liquors, 415 H St. NE, pending the negotiation of a voluntary agreement.
voted 4-2 not to support an Alcoholic Beverage Regulation Administration tavern liquor-license application from Levels Tavern pending the negotiation of a voluntary agreement. Levels Tavern’s owner said he plans to live in the five-story property; the first two floors would be dedicated to the business. Chris Thompson, a representative of the women’s halfway house Pathways Transitional Housing, objected to issuing the tavern a liquor license. Thompson said the business would lead to excessive noise, loitering, sex trafficking and other crimes.
unanimously voted to send a letter to ask various District agencies, particularly the D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation and the Metropolitan Police Department, to work with community organizations to develop a plan for the Ludlow-Taylor Elementary School playground. The city removed the playground equipment after deeming it hazardous, according to the commission.
unanimously supported the J.B. Johnson Nursing Center’s application to the Public Space Committee for 10 parking spaces. The center is located at 901 1st St. NW.
heard commissioner Charles Docter express appreciation for the new leadership at the D.C. Department of Transportation, which he said will better facilitate development of the Chinatown streetscape.
unanimously voted to send a letter to the D.C. Department of Transportation to ask for more details on parking options for the MetroAccess vans on G Street NW between 5th and 6th streets.
