Goodbye, Innervision
March 27, 2009
By HillChatter
We heard that Innervision, the wonderful art and office supply store on Barracks Row, is closing since owner JoAnn Rollings is retiring. One of the street’s longest merchants, the store opened in 1982. Make sure you stop by and wish Ms. Rollings a happy retirement. HillChatter will be sure to stop by and stock up on her favorite pens that she only finds there.

Molly Malone’s, come soon
HillChatter is happy to see Molly Malone’s in the old Finn macCools spot on Barracks Row. The new Irish pub isn’t open for business yet, but assistant manager Jessica Dee said they’re making the final touches and hope to open doors within the next two weeks. One can never have too many Irish establishments in a neighborhood. HillChatter loves a plate of bangers and mash.

Grab your spatulas
Hill’s Kitchen soon will begin offering evening and daytime classes. The workshops will cover knife skills, cooking techniques such as “Braising: Coaxing Flavor With Gentle Heat” and specific cuisines from “What To Do With a Rutabaga?” to “Making Marmalade.” The courses will start April 5; fees will range from $35 to $45. To reserve space, e-mail events@hillskitchen.com.

HillChatter is curious: What does one do with a rutabaga?

Belated congratulations
HillChatter sends belated congratulations to Elizabeth Haverkamp, who was engaged Jan. 27 to Auden Kaehler. She’s the former executive director of the Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals, better known as  “CHAMPS.”

Haverkamp told us that Kaehler popped the question just days before he departed for Malaysia, where he transferred for work. Haverkamp has since joined her future hubby, and they are now living in Kuala Lumpur. No date has been set, but it’s likely to be stateside, said the bride-to-be.

Don’t fence me in
The ratty chain-link fence around the parking lot under the Southwest Freeway (Virginia Avenue and I Street) has been ripped down by the city. Next time you’re out strolling Barracks Row take a look. The openness now makes the flower and trees in the pocket park look much more charming.

Dust off your cameras
Hurry up and break out the camera because the National Park Service has moved up the cherry blossom blooming period. According to the chief horticulturist, the prime blossom time will be from March 28 to April 11, a full four days ahead of the originally predicted dates. The peak time will be from April 1 to 4. According to a Park Service release, the peak range is defined when 70 percent of the Yoshino cherry trees are open. Peak bloom times have begun as early as March 15 (1990) and as late as April 18 (1958).

Summer waterfront concerts announced
The Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District recently announced its summer lunchtime concert schedule, which will begin May 20 with the doo-wop group The Jewels. The concerts will be staged behind the U.S. Department of Transportation building at New Jersey Avenue and Tingey Street SE from noon to 2 p.m.

All performances are free, and all types of bands will play, ranging from Caribbean to the ‘80s to a Beach Boys tribute. So “shake a tail feather” and check out the full schedule at capitolriverfront.org.
