Get ready for the first annual Hillys
August 21, 2009
By HillChatter
Award season is here. No, not the Emmys — it’s the Hillys. That’s right. The Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals (CHAMPS) will kick off awards season with the inaugural Hilly Awards, which honors the best of Capitol Hill businesses. Hill residents are being asked to nominate businesses online (champsdc.org) until Sept. 23. Voting will begin Sept. 26. Four awards are open for nominations: Eatery of the Year, Retailer of the Year, Service Provider of the Year and Best New Business.

Folks, now is the best time to “dine and shop local,” then nominate your favorite. See you at the awards ceremony in November. HillChatter better start shining her tiara.

Barack at Barracks
President Obama and family attended the Marine Barracks Evening Parade on July 24. In the past, presidents have made an annual trek to 8th and I streets to witness one of the best shows in town. Fans started lining up across from the barracks early on to get a peek at the president.

First lady Michelle and the older daughter, Malia, surprised tourists and Hill staffers when they lunched at Good Stuff Eatery the following week. Cheers and hoots welcomed the first mother-daughter pair while tourists clamored to get a picture. The Obamas must love hamburgers. ... Remember the president’s visit in May to our Five Guys in Southeast? It’s good to see the Hill businesses getting some of the spotlight.

Supplies for kids
The Fourth Street Neighbors in Southwest are again collecting supplies for schools in Near Southeast and Southwest. Among the throng of supplies needed: No. 2 pencils, crayons, highlighters, erasers, glue sticks, folders, index cards, Post-its, rulers, etc. If you wish to make a monetary donation, mail a check to SWNA 2009 School Supply Fund, P.O. Box 70131, Washington D.C. Donations are tax-deductible.

For information, contact coordinator Meg Brinckman at 202-554-2259 or mbrinckman@comcast.net.

Italian deli and more
A new Italian deli has moved into the vacant Banducci’s building at 2nd and F streets NE. The Toscana Cafe offers yummy Italian delicacies for lunch and dinner and will soon offer catering. The patio out front is decorated with cute tables and umbrellas.
HillChatter sees a cannoli in her near future.

Break out your steins
A hat tip to our friend at Frozen Tropics for digging up a delicious factoid: The restaurateur behind Dupont Circle’s Russia House is opening a German beer house at 1355 H St. The popular blog reported that Aaron McGovern wants to duplicate his success on the trendy corridor. Expect 12 hearty beers on tap, and I’m sure plenty of sauerkraut to go around.

HillChatter can’t wait as she will have another reason to wear her lederhausen aside from Halloween. Oompah!

Taxi on water
Water taxis are now available to Nationals games from the city-owned pier across the Anacostia River, according to a city press release. Six companies will shuttle gamegoers from Old Town Alexandria and the National Harbor in Maryland to Diamond Teague Park, at 1st Street and Potomac Avenue SE. The park is named after a 19-year-old member of the Earth Conservation Corps, which is located in near Southwest, who was murdered in 2003.

The water taxis are available only on game days. For information about the water taxi services, call 202-554-5000.
