| | | Edge Advertising’s ‘Stars and Bars’ design makes a racket | | May 15, 2009 | | | | Capitol Hill’s own Edge Advertising won a citywide contest, sponsored in part by the District Department of Transportation, for a new bike rack, which will be stationed throughout the city. The winning “Stars and Bars” design was the brainchild of the firm’s senior graphic designer, Monika Gornikiewicz, who bikes every day to the Pennsylvania Avenue office.
“Monika created a design that highlights the form and function of the bike rack and yet provides a clean and minimalist aesthetic,” a news release said. The new racks will be installed by next year.
Congratulations to owner Karin Edgett and her team. Now HillChatter needs to buy a bike to try out the groovy racks.
Spike’s mini empire
It seems our resident TV celeb chef Spike Mendelsohn is expanding his empire. According to a journal he posted on New York Magazine’s blog, the Good Stuff Eatery owner plans to open a pizzeria somewhere on the Hill. The new spot is next door to his Penn Avenue digs — the former Zack’s Taverna.
Knowing Spike’s penchant for high-quality eats, we’re sure to see some oddly paired yet delicious toppings on our slices.
H Street farmers market is open
Reminder to all that the H Street FreshFarm Market, freshfarmmarket.org, is now open every Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon at 624 H St., across the street from H Street Self Storage.
You can pick up organic milk and meats, yogurt, cheese, fruits, vegetables ... all the good things your mom told you to eat as a child. Support local farmers!
And if you have a great recipe for veggie lasagna, e-mail it to HillChatter, please.
Tasting 8th Street
HillChatter puttered around the Taste of 8th with friends and was delighted to see lines forming outside participating establishments. Eager patrons tucked inside Cava, which had yet to “officially” open but gave out samples of its fare. We thought the line for Belga Cafe would never end, but we think it might have something to do with the Belgian beer samples offered with the beef dish.
Friends reported that the crab cake at Starfish Cafe was fantastic (HillChatter is allergic) and the vino at Chat’s Liquor was ever tasty. Topped off with a delish cannoli at Trattoria Alberto’s, it made for a perfect day.
Vote for Dawn Price Baby
Dawn Price Baby clothier has been named as a finalist for the 2009 Parents Picks Awards for the Washington region by Nickelodeon. You can vote for the Market Row store at gocitykids.parentsconnect.com/parents-picks/Washington-dc-usa/best-washington-kids-clothing-store. Vote early and often, folks.
We love a parade
Our friends at the Marine Barracks Washington (8th & I streets SE) have begun their Friday evening parades. If you’ve never seen this parade, HillChatter highly suggests it — either for your or for out-of-town guests. We took Papa HillChatter, who is a former Marine, to a parade during his last visit, and Mama HillChatter says he told everyone at home about it for months.
Not only do you get to listen to the best military band around, but the silent drill team will dazzle you with its moves. (Those are real bayonets on the rifles, folks.) According to the Web site, mbw.usmc.mil, seats for the 2009 season are booked, but you can get day-of seats at 8 p.m. on a first-come basis.
H Street Country Club shows its face
We got an e-mail saying that the H Street Country Club is readying to open. You can take a look at the indoor putt-putt with a twist (and alcohol) at thehstreetcountryclub.com
And it’s not just golf — there’s also a 300-seat dining area where guests can munch on Mexican cuisine.
Looks like a fun time for all. HillChatter’s only question: Where is everyone going to park?
