Chateau-Animaux knows Bo
April 20, 2009
By HillChatter
The District is all aflutter with its newest resident — Bo, the Obamas’ new pup. And our own Chateaux-Animaux created a dolled-up gift basket for the first pooch on CBS’ Early Show on April 15.

Shop owner Dennis Bourgault packed up homemade cheese and blueberry Zanadoo treats for the country’s most famous Portuguese water dog, along with a “Yes We Did” doggie T-shirt. CBS was going to give the first family the basket later that day. If you see a motorcade heading for Barracks Row, you’ll know it’s Bo looking for more of those Zanadoo cookies.

Anniversaries abound!
Congratulations to Fitness Together, which celebrated its first anniversary this month with a soiree at Pap & Petey’s. The H Street gym specializes in personal training and one-on-one workouts. HillChatter needs to visit owner Alita and company today! We hope they have a prosperous second, third and fourth.

DC Access is celebrating its 10th anniversary of providing Hill residents with outstanding Internet access. Owned by husband-and-wife team Matt Wade and Martha Huizenga, the company supplies most local haunts with wireless service at unbeatable costs. Congratulations, Matt and Martha. You can find them at dcaccess.net.

The Hill’s best
In case you missed it, a good number of Hill establishments made the City Paper’s annual Best of D.C. issue, including Voice of the Hill! Our own Eastern Market got Best Farmers Market while Art & Soul won Best Pickle. (You read it right, best pickle.) Here’s a list of the other winners:

The sounds of Sundays
HillChatter loves spring for many reasons, but at the top of the list is the Eastern Market Music series, held each Sunday from May through October, with a short summer break. Founded by the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, the series hosts a wide genre of musicians, ranging from rockabilly to Samba to skiffle.

This year’s series will kick off May 3 with Daryl Davis (boogie-woogie, rockabilly) at 10:30 a.m. and the Blue Rhythm Boys (acoustic blues and swing) at 1 p.m. All performances are free at 7th Street and North Carolina Avenue SE. Visit capitolhillcommunityfoundation.org to see the full schedule.

Matchbox lunch
Good news for Matchbox lovers! The Barracks Row bistro will now be open for lunch starting at 10 a.m. on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, with brunch on the weekends. And soon, it will have about 20 outdoor seats. HillChatter can’t wait to take a long “business meeting” one sunny Friday afternoon.

Buses be gone
On a long walk into Southeast we saw that the school bus yard on M Street is gone. We knew it wasn’t going to last long with all the construction in the area. Seems the site will be cleared for the upcoming Canal Park, which is slated for a 2010 construction start.

Happy Birthday, Will
It’s not spring without Folger Shakespeare Library’s Shakespeare’s Birthday Open House, replete with jugglers, jesters and, of course, a Bard birthday cake. Go to the library at 201 East Capitol St. SE from noon to 4 p.m. on April 26 (Will’s 445th birthday) for a good time for all.

Hill Honorees at Helen Hayes Awards
Hill theater companies were properly represented at the Helen Hayes Awards on April 13. It was the 25th anniversary of the awards, which were founded to celebrate the best of Washington theater and are named after legendary actress Helen Hayes. Congratulations to the winners, who include:

Stadium sculptures
HillChatter checked out the new sculptures at Nationals Park on opening day. Upon entering the center-field gates, fans are immediately greeted with powerful likenesses of Washington Senators greats Walter Johnson and Frank “Hondo” Howard as well as Negro League Homestead Grays legend Josh Gibson.

The sculptures, by Omri Amrany of Illinois, have been panned by some and admired by others. Take in a game and check them out for yourselves. Either way, it’s nice to see these great players honored.

If you enter through the home-plate gates on the south side of the stadium, check out the four hanging mobiles designed by Hill artist Walter Kravitz. HillChatter likes the frivolity captured in the mobiles and can’t wait to see them lit up at night.
