Arena all Tony’d out; market volunteers needed
June 22, 2009
By HillChatter
Kudos to the good folks at the Arena Stage, whose two productions, “Next to Normal” and “33 Variations,” won four Tony Awards this month. “Next to Normal” nabbed three: Best Original Score, Best Orchestration, and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley.

“33 Variations” took home the Best Scenic Design of a Play. Oscar-winner Jane Fonda, who plays the lead, was nominated for Best Actress in a Play. Both productions called Arena Stage home until landing on Broadway last fall.

Volunteers needed for market
The Capitol Hill Association of Merchants and Professionals (CHAMPS) and Barracks Row Main Street need volunteers for the grand reopening of Eastern Market on June 27. The event includes live music, kids activities, local art and tours of the renovated market.
Volunteers will work one-, two-, or three-hour shifts in one of three main positions: information booth, tour guide or runner. Volunteer hours will be 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Volunteers will receive a limited-edition Eastern Market T-shirt to wear the day of the event. Interested persons should contact Jennifer Eubank at 202-478-2429 or e-mail easternmarket@capitolhill.org. Be sure to list your top two job preferences and available time slots. HillChatter hopes to see you there!

Back home
We heard that Eastern Market Pottery will be moving back into their old digs in the South Hall with the rest of the merchants. They set up temporary shop off Massachusetts Avenue after the fire. Be sure to check them out at easternmarketpottery.com.

Speaker of the Market?
Yes, that was former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and wife, Callista, being interviewed by Fox News’ Greta van Susteren at the Eastern Market park plaza last month. As onlookers milled about, the Gingriches talked about their book “5 Principles for a Successful Life” and responded to quips from faux newsman Jon Stewart.

Nice to see the speaker back on the Hill.

Ward 6 Dems Convention
Ward 6 Democrats is planning its 2009 convention, and the group is looking for a few good folks to serve as officers. Any Ward 6 resident who is a registered Democrat is eligible to serve as an officer or vote at the convention.

Elected officers are president, first vice president, second vice president, third vice president, recording secretary, corresponding secretary and treasurer. If you are interested in running for an officer position, contact Pat Johnson at hpjohnson@verizon.net. Think you’re not officer material? Then join one of the group’s committees or become a precinct representative. Information about the positions will be available at the event.

The convention will be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. June 23 at Tyler Elementary School, 1001 G St. SE. Voting will begin at 6:15. For information, contact president Charles Allen at cwallen@gmail.com.

Good luck to all candidates.

Lifetime achiever
Our own Dick Wolf was honored by the Committee of 100 with a lifetime achievement award for his contributions to the Capitol Hill Restoration Society. The Committee of 100 advocates responsible planning and land use following the guidelines of D.C. city planner Pierre L’Enfant.
Congrats, Mr. Wolf.

Buy a brick to help a dog
Hill Hounds is soliciting donations for the new Kingsman Field Dog Park in Northeast on D Street between 13th and 14th streets. Donations of all sizes are encouraged. Those who give at least $120 will get their message on a 4-by-8-inch brick, and those who give more than $200 will be recognized with an 8-by-8-inch brick.

To make a donation or to get more information go to hillhounds.com. HillChatter is certainly getting a brick for her hound.

Watch for Bulletin
The District Lock & Key space is getting a new tenant: Ted’s Bulletin. The folks who brought us Matchbox will open the 1920s-style diner early next year, according to The Washington Post. The fare will certainly be comfort food — lasagna, meatloaf and malted milkshakes should be on the menu, said one principal, Ty Neal, to The Post.

Neal said the eatery will be smaller than its nearby cousin, with enough seats for just 80 diners. Keep an eye out for updates in HillChatter. We’re excited to see how this comes along.
