International school mulls becoming charter
January 18, 2010
By the Voice
The International Graduate University, 1325 D St. SE, appears to be moving forward with plans to become a charter school, though details on the plan are still unavailable.

Staffers who answered phones at the school said they plan to submit a formal application to the D.C. Public Charter School Board by Feb. 1.

“This will all be able to be qualified and quantified after the first of February,” said an official who declined to identify herself.

At an October Southeast Capitol Hill advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 6B) meeting, school official Terry Shelton announced the charter plan. Later, the school scheduled a November community meeting, but subsequently canceled it.

Shelton said the school would likely allow high school students to earn their diplomas and credits toward an associate degree at the same time. The school would be government-themed and would invite elected officials as guest lecturers or adjunct faculty members, he said.

The International Graduate University stopped operating several years ago, though groups occasionally use its building. The school once hosted international students earning graduate degrees.
