District offers green roof subsidy
June 22, 2009
By the Voice
The D.C. Department of the Environment is offering a subsidy of up to $20,000 for the construction of green roofs on buildings in the city.
Qualifying green roofs — which are covered with vegetation to reduce storm-water runoff and help cool buildings — cannot be more than 4,000 square feet and must cover at least half of the total roof.

The city now offers $5 per square foot of green roof, up to the $20,000 maximum, which is two-thirds more than a subsidy it offered last year.
According to greenroofs.com, projects typically cost between $14 and $25 per square foot.

The city will fund green roof projects on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information and to apply, visit ddoe.dc.gov/greenroofs.
