Many of the recipients gathered in Eastern Market’s North Hall to pick up their checks on Wednesday. Individual grants totaled as high as $2,500. More than 200 groups requested grants — the highest number ever — up from an average of 140.
The grants provide money for a variety of projects ranging from schools gardens to Web site development. One of the grants will help purchase a bugle for Boy Scout Troop 380. The grantees must either be Hill organizations or do work that directly affects the Hill.
“It’s always challenging to make the decisions about the grants,” said Stephanie Deutsch, the foundation’s grants committee chair.
The foundation gives the grants twice a year, along with larger grants it gives out with proceeds from its annual dinner the fundraiser The Literary Feast. | | | | | Log in to comment on this article |
