Kingsman Field Dog Park construction should start in April
March 08, 2010

The D.C. Department of Parks and Recreation expects to break ground on a new dog park in Northeast in early April, though they have not chosen a contractor for the project.

The Kingsman Field Dog Park is slated to occupy part of the playing field adjacent to Options Public Charter School between E and F streets, and 13th Street and Tennessee Avenue. The plan for the 12,500-square-foot parcel includes separate areas for small and large dogs, new lighting and fencing. The park will be the first of its kind in or around Capitol Hill, and should be completed about four months after constructions begins.

After a bidding process last year that ended with the parks department rejecting all of the contractor applicants, Hill Hounds’ fundraising chair Nichole Remmert said the parks department has told the nonprofit that at least some of the eight applicants this round qualify to build the park.

The parks department has estimated the project will cost between $250,000 and $500,000, though it has not given a more specific number. Parks officials did not return multiple calls from the Voice.
Hill Hounds will maintain the park in part with the more than $20,000 it has raised. The money will also pay for the park’s extras —benches, picnic tables and additional trees.

The parks department will be responsible for removing existing asphalt, as well as installing fencing, lighting, a water source, recycling and garbage bins, and canine grass — artificial turf specially designed for dog use.

The organization is still soliciting sponsors to beef up its maintenance fund. Sponsors get a customized brick in the park’s perimeter paving. Bricks range from $120 up to $1,500. If they donate after April 15, donors will have to wait two years until the organization will install new bricks, Remmert said.
